A fierce battle is underway to identify and exploit new niches that offer high added value and specialization, directly impacting organizations\u2019 EBITDA. The Spanish technology sector, and within it, specific firms, are seizing endless opportunities in areas such as data management, data utilization, and artificial intelligence, among others.<\/p><p>This is not a future prospect but a present reality that is shaping the activities and processes of entire industries. Riding this wave is <strong>AXPE Consulting<\/strong>, which aims to become the leading national consultancy outside of the large multinational firms by next year, targeting a revenue of <strong>100 million euros in 2023<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This highly ambitious roadmap will also be applied in <strong>Cantabria<\/strong>, where AXPE operates an <strong>advanced specialization center<\/strong> in <strong>Malia\u00f1o<\/strong>, employing <strong>around 100 high-level specialists<\/strong>. Now, the company is taking things further by shifting part of its activities to the region, handling projects from other parts of Spain and even internationally\u2014particularly from <strong>Great Britain<\/strong>. The outcome? The corporation is set to <strong>at least double its workforce in the region, hiring 100 new employees this year<\/strong>, all highly skilled professionals in advanced technology fields.<\/p><p>One key factor behind this move is the Cantabrian origin of AXPE&#8217;s <strong>current director, Avelino Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez<\/strong>, who took over the company last year. \u201cOur current strategy focuses on <strong>new, untapped niches<\/strong>. We are <strong>exiting mature markets<\/strong>, letting go of some contracts and clients in favor of more <strong>high-growth potential areas<\/strong>,\u201d he explains.<\/p><h5>A Strategic Shift<\/h5><p>The group operates through various business divisions, covering fields such as <strong>cloud computing, advanced analytics, data management, artificial intelligence, DevOps (systems integration), user experience, and digital marketing, among others<\/strong>.<\/p><p>\u201cThe market is <strong>so vast<\/strong>, and we <strong>have the capability<\/strong> to operate where we want. That\u2019s why we have chosen to <strong>stay focused<\/strong> and not get distracted by operations and maintenance contracts that <strong>other companies<\/strong> can handle. Our goal is to <strong>always be at the cutting edge<\/strong>, with <strong>clear benefits<\/strong> not only in <strong>profitability<\/strong> but also in <strong>external perception<\/strong>,\u201d Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez states.<\/p><p>AXPE collaborates with <strong>almost all IBEX-35 companies<\/strong> and is increasingly positioning itself within the <strong>highest segments of the technology business<\/strong>.<\/p><p>\u201cThere is a huge divide between <strong>large companies<\/strong> that are forced to prioritize price and those offering <strong>real added value<\/strong>. There are niche firms in the <strong>high-end segments<\/strong>, but they are often <strong>too small to scale their businesses<\/strong>. We, however, <strong>have the capacity<\/strong> to operate as a <strong>&#8217;boutique multi-niche consultancy&#8217; and outperform them<\/strong>,\u201d says the director.<\/p><p>From a <strong>strategic standpoint<\/strong>, the company\u2019s approach is <strong>clear-cut<\/strong>\u2014even radical compared to other organizations.<\/p><p>\u201cWe reject anything <strong>below a 35% margin<\/strong>, as well as <strong>mature technologies<\/strong>,\u201d Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez affirms, acknowledging that this shift requires <strong>overcoming internal cultural challenges<\/strong>.<\/p><p>At the core of this roadmap is <strong>talent acquisition<\/strong>:<br \/><strong>&#8220;This year, we expect to hire around 500 high-level technology professionals nationwide.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><h5>Moving to a New Location<\/h5><p>AXPE is also exploring the possibility of <strong>relocating its Malia\u00f1o operations to a more prominent location<\/strong>. Although still in the early stages, the group confirms that it is evaluating a move to the <strong>Cantabria Science and Technology Park (PctCan)<\/strong> to enhance the visibility of its expansion in the region.<\/p><p>From this location, AXPE aims to <strong>set trends<\/strong> in the interplay between <strong>society, technology, and the market<\/strong>. The vision? To become the <strong>leading Spanish consultancy in high-value specialization<\/strong>, covering both <strong>technological and functional<\/strong> aspects, with applications in <strong>banking, regulatory compliance, and beyond<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Beyond artificial intelligence, the <strong>company is training top analysts in the financial sector<\/strong>, dealing with <strong>higher-level mathematics and algorithms<\/strong>.<\/p><h5>Why Cantabria?<\/h5><p>Madrid\u2019s technology sector is known for <strong>high employee turnover<\/strong>. However, in <strong>peripheral regions like Cantabria<\/strong>, <strong>workers tend to stay longer<\/strong>. This is why <strong>Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez is bringing projects to the region<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The company serves <strong>clients such as Repsol, Banco Santander, and El Corte Ingl\u00e9s<\/strong>, managing projects at a <strong>national level<\/strong>.<\/p><p>But the focus isn\u2019t just <strong>national<\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s <strong>international<\/strong> as well.<br \/>\u201cThere is a lot of talent in Cantabria. We have a <strong>strong social commitment<\/strong> to attracting high-level professionals,\u201d says Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez.<\/p><p>This approach has already attracted <strong>projects from Great Britain<\/strong> to Santander.<\/p><p>At the <strong>regional level<\/strong>, AXPE also collaborates with institutions such as <strong>IDIVAL and the University of Cantabria<\/strong>.<\/p><p>\u201cWe handle the <strong>development, maintenance, and evolution<\/strong> of the <strong>Cantabrian government\u2019s applications<\/strong>,\u201d Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez highlights.<\/p><h5>Growth Plans: Strengthening Cantabria\u2019s Role<\/h5><p>The <strong>goal is clear<\/strong>: to <strong>concentrate as much talent as possible<\/strong> in the region.<\/p><p>\u201cWe are <strong>managing Basque Country projects<\/strong> from Cantabria. <strong>There is talent here<\/strong>, and it is <strong>more loyal<\/strong>. Managing operations <strong>from Cantabria is easier than from Madrid<\/strong>,\u201d he explains.<\/p><h5>&#8220;We Want to Be Spain\u2019s Leading Tech Talent Hub Outside Madrid&#8221;<\/h5><p>Founded in Madrid, <strong>AXPE Consulting<\/strong> has grown and evolved for <strong>over two decades<\/strong>, now entering a <strong>new phase<\/strong> driven by the increasing demand for tech professionals and services amid <strong>rapid innovations<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The company is <strong>moving away from the Latin American market<\/strong> to <strong>focus on Europe<\/strong>, where <strong>Germany and the UK<\/strong> have an urgent need for tech talent.<\/p><p>\u201cThere is a shortage of <strong>about 300,000 technology workers in Spain<\/strong>,\u201d says Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez.<\/p><p>Ultimately, it all comes down to <strong>cost and profitability<\/strong>.<br \/>\u201cSalaries in Germany are <strong>much higher<\/strong>. In the UK, a project <strong>costs 1.5 million euros<\/strong>, while in Spain, the same project costs <strong>600,000 euros<\/strong>. We want to <strong>leverage the wealth of tech talent in Spain\u2019s regions<\/strong> and become a <strong>leading hub for tech professionals outside Madrid<\/strong>,\u201d he explains.<\/p><h5>Strong Financial Performance<\/h5><p>AXPE currently <strong>generates around six million euros in revenue from Cantabria<\/strong>. Its <strong>combined regional budget<\/strong>, including the <strong>Basque Country<\/strong>, is set to <strong>surpass ten million euros in 2022<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez also highlights <strong>synergies<\/strong> and <strong>strong relationships<\/strong> with other <strong>regional technology firms<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Regarding <strong>talent recruitment<\/strong>, he emphasizes:<br \/>&#8220;People are drawn to companies that offer a <strong>clear future<\/strong>. This isn\u2019t just talk\u2014our <strong>vision is backed by substance and ambition<\/strong>, and talent recognizes that.&#8221;<\/p><p>With this perspective, AXPE aims to <strong>reach 70 million euros in revenue this year<\/strong>.<\/p><h5>Cantabria: The Second Most Important Hub<\/h5><p>Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez makes one thing clear:<br \/><strong>&#8220;Our main hub outside Madrid is Cantabria. Not yet in revenue, but definitely in workforce size.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><p>From Cantabria, <strong>AXPE manages projects across Spain and internationally<\/strong>.<br \/>\u201cThe <strong>more we shift here, the better<\/strong>,\u201d he insists.<\/p><p>Additionally, he stresses that <strong>hiring in Cantabria is much easier<\/strong>.<br \/>\u201cIn Madrid, <strong>the dropout rate is 50%<\/strong>.
